Hello and welcome again to another of my mad ramblings. It has been a while since I put my fingers to the keyboard and hammered out one of these. Forgive my absence and understand that none of it was your fault.
I am responsible for three classes; Champion, Minstrel and Warden. The first one that I want to talk about with all of you is The Champion.
ZOMG! Don’t nerf Fervour! (or Why, Orion, why do you have to do this?)
I could attempt to come up with answers to this question. I could make up some truly insightful statements and support them with all sorts of data and people would still ask why. To that end, I feel that I should simply be as blunt and honest as I can.
I want to. I have supporting reasons for wanting to and I would like to share them with all of you.
Reasoning
Champions, as a class, have become increasingly single-purposed. I am not saying that there are no Champions out there that enjoy Glory, but I am saying that there are lot more Champions that spend all of their time in Fervour than in any other stance. (For the record, Controlled Burn !=stance.)
Fervour, the stance not the pip, has become the focal point of the class and as a result the other stances and trait lines are increasingly marginalized. This draws complaints to the surface highlighting lack of class versatility and calling for the head of derelict stances and drawing more requests to strengthen the existing primary stance.
Before you stop reading and throw your hands into the air in disgust, I LOVE Fervour. Fervour is great and is actually pretty well balanced in the overall scheme of things. In point of fact, I think that Fervour can be bumped up a little damage wise. (I said a little!) Fervour does not need any major adjustments. Any changes that would increase the versatility of the class must then ‘do no harm’ to Fervour. Fervour will be altered somewhat, but the mantra of ‘do no harm’ will be primary in my mind.
What does that mean for the other stances? Let us break them down, shall we.
Glory
Rules for revising glory.
1) The Champion must remain a viable tank.
2) The Champion should maintain game play consistent with the preferred play style to encourage the stance.
3) The Champion should not mimic the existing tanks in play style or skill set. Champions play champions because they like being Champions.
4) Champions are based on Gimli. Gimli did not use a shield. Champions will not use shields.
You can breath again, it is really not that bad. Our goals are pretty clear. Provide game play that keeps the Champion active. Champions are a very active class. Some people call this “face rolling” I call it rotation-based game play.
Okay smarty-pants designer guy, how are you going to make a tank without a shield a) fun and b) survivable enough while balancing damage output and maintaining their preferred style at the same time?
Champions should not follow the Guardian mode for tanking. They should not hide behind a shield, deal less damage, or sacrifice their game play. They should tank like a champion. They should use their skills in a rotation-based style of game play that allows them to mitigate damage, maintain threat, all while dishing out some savage beats.
Much of the tanking aspect of Champs will be pushed to the stance, with a moderate amount of skill revision or modification allowing for the rotation to mitigate the massive damage that Champions can output. What this means for Glory is as follows: no more damage reduction. Hit like a truck have fun! That is the goal of playing games after all, having fun! At the same time, understand that if all you do is hit things you are likely not going to survive. You will need to find the rotation that allows you to find that rotation that mimics the Champion game play as closely as possible.
What about Fervour? I tank in Fervour just fine.
Remember when I told you that some things would change and the mantra of do no harm? No harm has been done to Fervour. Skills however that generate an additional amount of threat will be modified in a manner that will make it harder for the Champ in Fervour to tank. You’ll likely still have the chance to grab threat, but holding it will be a different story. Fervour is altered but not hurt.
Yeah, well, Ardour will still be worthless.
Potentially. Ardour still could be a poor stance relegated to a small cadre of folks who just like abuse, or we could address it in the same manner as above.
Rules for Ardour:
1) Ardour must occupy a clear role.
2) While in Ardour the Champion should maintain game play consistent with the preferred play style to encourage the stance.
3) While in Ardour the Champion should feel that there is a benefit to being in this stance.
With the added problem of being brutally honest with you, I must confess, this is a hard nut to crack. Ardour is in a rough spot, but not one that cannot be salvaged. Raid’s typically prefer the single target strength of Fervour and they should in those fights where there are only a few extra mobs in the fight. Where does Ardour fit?
Fervour is a good soloing line, allowing me to take on several mobs at a time. Ardour should take that part of the Champion to the next level. Ardour then is looking to be the soloing AoE line. Emphasis on AoE. Focusing on this we are looking at power consumption, better fervour generation, removing the negative hit to parry and evade and boosting the damage done by AoE skills while also looking at lowering their cooldowns. All as a function of the stance.

I hope that clarifies the why and how a little. Details, for the moment need to remain really, really high in the sky. I have drafts done, but I want to make certain that all of this makes sense to the team before I start giving out any of the major changes…
Looking forward to chatting with you all in the coming weeks and months.
